Auburndale

The City of Auburndale's July 4th celebration has a different feel this year. After two years of issues surrounding water conditions at the city beach, the city has turned the beach at Lake Ariana into a more passive park with picnicking and boating rather than swimming. Patrons will find grass where the beach was and pavilions connected by a sidewalk network. Fireworks by Zambelli's fire off at 9 p.m. According to Auburndale Parks and Recreation Director Mickey Etherton, this year's display will be a little bit bigger than last year's. Parking is free. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Bartow

The Bartow Adult Concert Band plays patriotic music, directed by John DeYoung, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Bartow Civic Center. Admission is free.

Guests can enjoy a 50-round cannon salute by Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 116th Field Artillery, following the 9:30 p.m. fireworks show. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Lake Wales

Lake Wales hosts its Independence Day Celebration from 2 to 9 p.m. on the shore of Lake Wailes. Music is provided by Parties by Robert. Patrons can enjoy games, pony rides, face painting, food and the Kidz Zone from 1st Assembly of God. Fireworks cap off the evening at 9:30pm

Dirt Days, June 25th

This event is free and lots of fun. I took my boys last month and we had a great time. I just received an email saying there are still spots available for Saturday's Dirt days. You have to call to register, see phone # below.

Ask Mom or Dad to bring you
to our monthly “It Matters What
You Grow” meetings. Each
month you will plant seeds or
take cuttings for a plant to grow
in our parks and one to take
home.
Join us on Saturday, June 25, for
a special “American Beautyberry”
Picnic at the Christina Park Picnic
Pavilion. We’ll start at 9 a.m. and
have a picnic lunch at 11 a.m. with
hot dogs for everyone, games, prizes and fun activities
and, of course, we’ll have watermelon and a seed-spittin’
contest with prizes for the best spittin’ … and you won’t
even get in trouble!

Also, please wear your tennis shoes rather than sandals or flip-flops as we have relay games planned for after we plant our American Beautyberry seeds and cuttings. And don’t forget about the watermelon seed-spittin’ contest after lunch. That should be lots of fun, too!

Pre-registration required; call Miss Glenda at 534-4340.
Limited to 40 kids (ages 6-12). Must bring an adult.

Free Smoothie at Tropical Smoothie tomorrow; wear your flip flops.

On June 17th, Tropical Smoothie Café will celebrate the 5th anniversary of National Flip Flop Day! It all started back in 2007 as a celebration encouraging our customers to kick off summer, and their shoes, by wearing a pair of flip flops. As a simple thank you to our loyal customers, the first 500 people wearing flip flops at each location were given a FREE 24 oz. Jetty Punch smoothie. Soon after, we realized that National Flip Flop Day was also the perfect opportunity to spread some sunshine to those in need. In 2008, we proudly announced a national charity partnership with a magical place called Camp Sunshine. Today, we still spend National Flip Flop Day celebrating the kick off of summer by wearing flip flops and giving away free smoothies, but we also raise awareness and money for Camp Sunshine. This year, we decided to expand our charity efforts into six weeks of fundraising to help children with life-threatening illnesses and their families to make more magical memories.

Learn more about Camp Sunshine here. Make a donation at any local Tropical Smoothie Café, or right now by clicking here. And, don't forget to stop by your local Tropical Smoothie Café on June 17th for a FREE 24 oz. Jetty Punch smoothie*. Just remember to wear your flip flops, and to maybe bring along a dollar or two to help those in need. That's the spirit we started National Flip Flop Day with five years ago, and one we hope will continue for many years to come.

*Limit 500 smoothies per location
