Chalk for Charity

3rd Annual Chalk for Charity Event:

February 1, 2014 in downtown Lakeland, FL

The 3rd Annual Chalk for Charity fundraiser will be presented by the Knights of Columbus and the Lakeland Citizen's Police Academy Alumni Association on Saturday, February 1, 2014. Artists will use chalk and liquid tempera as their medium. The artwork will be done on Kentucky Avenue and Main Street in downtown Lakeland, Florida.

Chalk for Charity attendees can purchase tokens to cast votes for their favorite works of art. Prizes will be awarded to the artists who receive the most votes. There will also be Professional and Amateur Awards presented. Attendees can enjoy at least one interactive 3D piece.
There will be a children's area where parents, grandparents, and guardians can purchase small squares for children to display their creativity.

Parking in city garages will be free during the event.

Artist will begin their work early Saturday morning. Public viewing and voting for Chalk for Charity will take place from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Official judging of the outdoor art will begin at 4:00 p.m. The streets will remain closed for viewing the art until 10 p.m. (View photos of last year's event by clicking here.)

The monies raised from this year’s event will go to fund Lakeland Knights of Columbus Global Wheelchair Mission and the Lakeland Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association (which supports police academy scholarships and projects of the Lakeland Police Department). The Global Wheelchair Mission provides wheelchairs to those in need around the world. Since 2003 over 20,000 wheelchairs have been donated.

Bok Tower celebration-Free Admission

http://boktowergardens.org/founders-day-celebration/

Join us in celebrating our 85th anniversary with up-close-and-personal experiences at the Gardens. We will be open free of charge on Saturday, February 1 in honor of our Dedication Day ceremony and events.

Bok Tower Gardens commemorates its 85th anniversary with free admission and a special Dedication Day ceremony on Saturday, February 1 with former U.S. Senator Bob Graham. Your Story Is Our Story is the theme of the day’s event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The National Historic Landmark was dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge on February 1, 1929 as a gift to the American people from Pulitzer Prize-winning author, humanitarian and world peace advocate Edward Bok.  Bok’s grandmother told him to “make you the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it,” which he did throughout his lifetime – and it still guides the Gardens’ mission today.

Crossing the Moat – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

One of the Gardens’ most popular special events, “Crossing the Moat,” gives visitors a rare opportunity to pass through the historic iron gates that surround the Singing Tower for a closer look at the Great Brass Door. Designed by renowned master metal worker Samuel Yellin, the Tower’s imposing door weighs approximately 1,100 pounds and features 32 brass panels depicting the Biblical story of creation.

Dedication Day Ceremony – 11 a.m.

Japanese drummers will perform at 10:15 a.m. to invite all present to the Singing Tower for a ceremony featuring the presentation of the colors by the Lake Wales High School JROTC, followed by the singing of “America the Beautiful” by Amelia Updike, community volunteer and friend of Bok Tower Gardens.
Father Tom Seitz, Jr. from the Church of the Good Shepherd in Lake Wales will give the invocation, and the City of Lake Wales will present a proclamation declaring the first week of February as “Bok Tower Gardens Week.”
Former U.S. Senator Bob Graham will speak about the rich history and passion of Edward Bok and the historical importance of Bok Tower Gardens to the State of Florida. This will be followed by a major announcement affecting the future of the Gardens.
Dundee Ridge Middle School “Select Choir,” directed by Cathy Montero, will perform together with Geert D’hollander on the Singing Tower carillon. Complimentary refreshments will be served immediately following the ceremony.

Tree Planting – 2 p.m.

In keeping with Edward Bok’s enduring interest in nature, the Gardens will host a special tree planting ceremony at 2 p.m. The trees serve as a memento of the anniversary and a tangible way to follow the advice given to a young Edward by his grandmother to “make you the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it.”

Other February 1 Activities:

  • Free Pinewood Estate tours from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m.
  • Free greenhouse tours from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Free conservation tours at 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 p.m.
  • Distribution of 2,500 longleaf pine seedlings for visitors to plant at home
  • “A Look Back” exhibit in the Visitor Center featuring lesser-known facts, stories and photographs from throughout the Gardens’ 85-year history

“STEM, STEAM, STREAM, and Everything in Between” Collaborative Spring Break Day Camp

This Spring Break: Explore nature at Bok Tower Gardens, dig for fossils at the Mulberry Phosphate Museum, become a pioneer at the Polk County History Center, create a masterpiece at the Polk Museum of Art, and engineer a sustainable world at FIPR! For more information, visit www.fipr.state.fl.us (or you can ask us!).

“STEM, STEAM, STREAM, and Everything in Between”
Collaborative Spring Break Day Camp

Polk County public school students will be on Spring Break from March 24 to 28, 2014, but that doesn’t mean learning has to take a break also! Students from 9 to 12 years old can participate in a unique and local Spring Break day camp focused on science, technology, engineering, math, the arts, and reading (STEM, STEAM and STREAM) via fun, hands-on learning activities at five of Polk’s finest institutions. Program and education coordinators from Bok Tower Gardens, the Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute, the Mulberry Phosphate Museum, the Polk County History Center and the Polk Museum of Art have collaborated to formulate the day camp events into the best that their locations can offer. Participating students will spend each of the five days of the camp week at a different institution, guided through the day by coordinating staff, and gain STEM/STEAM/STREAM learning experience through activities including:
  • Wildlife-watching while hiking and food gardening techniques at Bok Tower Gardens,
  • Handling millions-of-years-old fossils from Florida and designing a robot to dig for fossils at the Mulberry Phosphate Museum,
  • Reenacting Florida pioneer life through clothing, wild foods, and everyday skills (like lassoing a cow!) at the Polk County History Center,
  • Drawing, theater-performing and printmaking (including screen printing t-shirts!) at the Polk Museum of Art, and
  • Engineering filters to make cleaner water, making paper from invasive exotic cogongrass and gaining communication technology experience at the Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute.
The price for this week long camp is $200

Lake County Water Authority free fishing clinic

TAVARES — An enduring image from TV's "The Andy Griffith Show" is of Opie and Andy walking down a dirt road carrying cane poles. Dads and grandpas — and moms and grandmas, for that matter — can recreate that scene, in a much more modern context, of course.

The Lake County Water Authority is inviting youngsters 4 and older to a free fishing clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 15 at Hickory Point Recreational Facility. Lunch will be provided. Participants will receive a goodie bag. Hosted by the Teen Sportfishing Association, the clinic is limited to 100 kids. Interested? RSVP at 352-343-3777.
