Kids Running Program

My friend just posted something cool that I may have to take my boys to try soon.  Sounds like a great way to burn off some energy and learn more about the sport of running.

Lakeland Runners Club- Kid’s Running Program

Location – Lakeland High School Track

Time – 5:30pm- Weekly, Tuesday evenings

The Program is open to kids of all running abilities 5 years old and up. The program directors help prepare the kids for a lifetime of running. Parents do not have to be LRC members for their children to run. However, the Lakeland Runners Club does offer a student membership for only $5. The workouts will include stretching, repeats, sprints, and distance runs. As kids progress they may also want to move up to train with the adult running group that meets at 6:00pm at the same location. Parents are required to stay at the track for the entirety of the kids program.

Tropical Smoothie, Free smoothie on Flip Flop Day

Every year, on the third Friday in June Tropical Smoothie Café celebrates its national holiday; National Flip Flop Day! This year's National Flip Flop Day will be held on June 15, 2012. And, customers who come into our more than 300 Cafés nationwide from 2 pm to 7 pm sporting their finest flip flops will receive a free 24oz. Jetty Punch Smoothie. Sure, Tropical Smoothie Café loves flip flops so much that we've created a holiday to celebrate the shoe. But, there's more to it than just that. What started as a day to thank our customers for their loyalty to Tropical Smoothie Café, has turned into a mission to raise money for Camp Sunshine. Camp Sunshine is the only retreat in the nation to address the effects of a life threatening illness on every member of the immediate family – the ill child, the parents and the siblings.
And, you don't have to wait for National Flip Flop Day to help! Now through June 15, you can make a real difference in the lives of these children and their families by stopping by your local Tropical Smoothie Café and making a donation.
You can learn more about Camp Sunshine here. And, if you want to make a donation online click here.
We'll see you on June 15th from 2pm – 7pm... don't forget to wear your flip flops and donate!

Barnes and Noble Summer 2012 Reading program to be announced soon!

Summer Reading Program
Fostering a love of reading and its rewards, the Barnes & Noble Imagination's Destination Summer Reading program is popular with students in first through sixth grades and educators throughout America.
Participation is a fun and easy way for kids to earn free books. They simply read any eight books – library books, books borrowed from friends or books bought at Barnes & Noble – write about their favorite part in our Reading Journal, and bring a completed Reading Journal to a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Children then choose their free book from the books listed on the Reading Journal and collect their free book from a store near them.
Details about the 2012 Summer Reading program will be announced May 22.

READKIDDOREAD

I found this great website that one of my favorite author's created to help encourage reading in kids.
It has great reading lists for different age groups and tips/suggestions for keeping them reading even as they get older.

The site is http://www.readkiddoread.com/home

and here is a list of their top summer reading tips:

http://www.readkiddoread.com/uploads/summerreadingtips.php

MOMS & DADSyour kid could fall TWO YEARS BEHIND IN SCHOOL this summer!

Without reading, kids lose an average of one to three months of achievement over the summer. By the end of 6th grade, children who do not read over the summer are as much as two years behind other kids who do.*

Moms and Dads…getting our kids into reading this summer is our job.

Experts know that reading 6 books over the summer is all kids need, to maintain the reading level they gained in school.* They also know that the more kids read in the summer, the more they gain.

Kids read more when they are given books they like…especially if they can choose their own books.

Check out our 2nd Annual Summer Reading List on ReadKiddoRead.com and get started.

Stop the Summer Slide with these ten tips from James Patterson:

  1. Start today! Find a fun backpack or cute summer bag to keep book choices in until school’s out.

  2. Find books your kids love. Check out our summer reading list here for starters. Talk with your child about their interests. Kids read more if they read what they like. E-reader, paperbacks, hard covers, comic books are all fine. Reading is the goal!

  3. Get a Library Card in your child’s name. Visit your library…the resources they have for the summer are usually terrific. And the Children’s Librarian will usually bend over backwards to help your child find fun stuff to read.

  4. Break down the summer reading goal in smaller daily or weekly increments.  Want to read 6 books? Divide the number of pages by the weeks or days available for summer reading, and set a reasonable goal. Or just allot 30 minutes a day.

  5. Set aside a daily “no-electronics” time for summer reading. Summer days are long—there’s always time for reading, if we make it a priority.

  6. “Buddy Read” together. Model reading with your child. Read the same books together, and talk about them.

  7. Create a Summer Reading Club with friends.   It’s always more fun if you can share the experience.

  8. Reward progress: set goals with your child, and track their achievements. Give them little “awards” for progress. Have a bigger end-of-summer reward.

  9. Travel with your books wherever you go- Take them to the beach, in the car, on vacations, and to the pool. Make the “in between” moments count. Put books everywhere your kids might be “bored” and want to turn on the TV—such as the breakfast table, the bedside table—wherever.

  10. Remember: it’s up to you to make it fun. Don't turn it into a “summer chore” that must be done before you can have fun. Reading is fun! If it isn’t, keep at it till they find books they can’t put down. Then reward yourself, Mom and Dad, because you have just given your child the best present you could ever have imagined… the gift of reading--for life.
