“STEM, STEAM, STREAM, and Everything in Between”
Collaborative Spring Break Day Camp

Polk County public school students will be on Spring Break from March 24 to 28, 2014, but that doesn’t mean learning has to take a break also! Students from 9 to 12 years old can participate in a unique and local Spring Break day camp focused on science, technology, engineering, math, the arts, and reading (STEM, STEAM and STREAM) via fun, hands-on learning activities at five of Polk’s finest institutions. Program and education coordinators from Bok Tower Gardens, the Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute, the Mulberry Phosphate Museum, the Polk County History Center and the Polk Museum of Art have collaborated to formulate the day camp events into the best that their locations can offer. Participating students will spend each of the five days of the camp week at a different institution, guided through the day by coordinating staff, and gain STEM/STEAM/STREAM learning experience through activities including:
  • Wildlife-watching while hiking and food gardening techniques at Bok Tower Gardens,
  • Handling millions-of-years-old fossils from Florida and designing a robot to dig for fossils at the Mulberry Phosphate Museum,
  • Reenacting Florida pioneer life through clothing, wild foods, and everyday skills (like lassoing a cow!) at the Polk County History Center,
  • Drawing, theater-performing and printmaking (including screen printing t-shirts!) at the Polk Museum of Art, and
  • Engineering filters to make cleaner water, making paper from invasive exotic cogongrass and gaining communication technology experience at the Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute.
The price for this week long camp is $200
